History of The Ladybower Reservoir
Stephen, has been a farmer since
he left university over 30 years
ago. Spitewinter had been
his grandfather's farm
but his father preferred
to work in the local
steelworks.
Stephen's farming
genes were passed
down by his mother, a
farmer's daughter, but
in recent years he had,
like many others, been
feeling the pinch and diversified
into pheasants.
Stephen's farm has some 10,000
pheasants at the peak of the
season. Most are destined for local
shoots, but some go straight to
Deborah's kitchen
Deborah, is the brains in the the kitchen.
Her menu, which changes every two or
three weeks to maintain interest
among the pub's dining regulars,
takes care of conservative
tastes with scampi and
home made pies.
Deborah and Stephen met
some 10 years ago at a
grouse shoot where they
were beaters.
They took up the challenge of
purchasing the Ladybower Inn
which they opened in August 2001 and
haven't looked back since.
She and Stephen have a deal. He stays
out of her kitchen and looks after the bar.
"Stephen doesn't want to know" and I
don't want him in there joked Deborah.
